| WHAT IS ALABASTER |
The
origin of the word ‘alabaster’ is uncertain; in the
Greek language, as in Latin, the word ‘alabaster’ is a

ALABASTER IN VOLTERRA |
The Chamber of Commerce of Pisa, the local
authority of Volterra and the Cassa di Risparmio
di Volterra bank decided to set up this website to
promote and valorise the long-standing local tradition
of alabaster products made by craftsmen in the Volterra
area. The materials used, the techniques of making the
products by hand, and the shapes of the finished
products draw on experience passed on from craftsman to
craftsman over the years.
In particular, you can find information on this website
about the origins and the history of the working of
alabaster in Volterra, the different types of alabaster,
and all the initiatives in the Volterra area which
involve the alabaster craftsmen and their products.
The site also provides detailed information about those
craftsmen who have chosen to adopt the
Community Trade Mark
“Alabaster in Volterra”, which was set up and registered
by the Chamber of Commerce of Pisa as an EU trademark at
the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market in
Alicante (www.uami.eu.int/en/). |

taste of the Italian craftsman and of a tradition which
is renewed over time.
Alabaster, which is a soft and fragile stone, most of
all needs the hands of a craftsman to bring it to life.
Forms which are both art and craft are invented in the
workshops every day. The charm of alabaster objects
comes from their uniqueness and from the fact that...[continue] |
